Deuteronomy 31:8
The Lord is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”

Twenty-three years ago our nation went through a catastrophic and life altering event.  I was in English class my senior year of High School.  I still remember my government teacher walking us to the library to see the tv.  I was watching the screen as I saw the towers fall.  There have been moments in history that have been monumentally evil.  And sad to say, more are coming.  But the encouragement in Deuteronomy 31 is specific and clear.

Moses uttered these words to his apprentice Joshua as he commissioned him to take the Israelites into the Promised Land.  The Lord goes before the people he sends to accomplish his will.  He will not leave us or abandon us.  His strength will not fail, and his path will not wander.  We follow a God that has everything under control…so why be afraid?  Why be discouraged?

It is easy in the midst of chaos to give in to the emotion of the moment.  It is easy to forget who is in control.  Even Joshua, one of the greatest leaders in scripture needed this reminder!  As we go through the trials and tribulations of life, let us hold fast to the good shepherd.  I am reminded of the great Psalm that David wrote.  I hope it is an encouragement to you as you navigate the day today!

The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need.
He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters.
He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.  Even when I go through the darkest valley,
I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live.
