Psalm 77:11-12

I will remember the deeds of the Lord;

    yes, I will remember your wonders of old.

I will ponder all your work,

    and meditate on your mighty deeds.

C.S. Lewis, in his book The Silver Chair, refers to the problem of forgetfulness. In the book Aslan teaches Jill to repeat His instructions in order for her to remember. “‘Child’ Aslan says… ‘perhaps you do not see quite as well as you think. But the first step is to remember. Repeat to me, in order, the four signs.’” Like most of us, Jill forgets, and the  journey for her and her friends is changed forever. .

In Psalm 77 the Psalmist, Aspah, gives us a similar exhortation. He says the first step toward victory in any difficult circumstance is simply to stop and remember the faithfulness of the Lord. Today, are you going through a difficult situation? Have a difficult decision to make? Difficult person to try and relate to? Difficult circumstance you are facing? Not sure how you’re going to make it through? The first step is to stop and remember all the faithful work of God in your life in the past. If He brought you to it, He will bring you through it.

Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have given their lives in service to our country. Today, let’s take time to stop and remember their sacrifice and say “thank you”. Also, let’s take the time to remember the faithful deeds of the Lord and rest in the knowledge that He will never fail. Remember, the God of your yesterday is the God of your today. Trust Him.
