“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
Some very close friends of mine challenged me to memorize this verse and keep it hidden in my heart. This was 25 years ago when I was struggling with some issues and this couple was who I talked to about what was going on in my life. They were great listeners and encouraged me to spend time dwelling on the truth of the words in this verse. I can remember Chris telling me to use this as a litmus test for anything that I wanted to spend time thinking about to make sure it was pleasing to the Lord. If it wasn’t, then I needed to move on and put it behind me.
What are you focused on in your life right now? What consumes your thoughts and actions? I constantly must remind myself of this verse so I will take the time to seek God’s discernment. I believe in the old saying “garbage in, garbage out” because when I am filling my mind with things that are pleasing to the Lord, what comes out of my mouth and my actions are more aligned with Him and not the world. I still fail on a regular basis, but I bathe in God’s grace and the fact that each day is full of new opportunities to live for him. Are you thinking about things that bring glory to our heavenly Father? Take the time to memorize this verse and hide it in your heart so that you might strive to live a life that pleases the Lord.
