Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.

I know, I know.  Choosing this passage is “ low hanging fruit“.  And it might cause a certain jingle to be stuck in your head the rest of the day…But have you considered the nature of what kind of character qualities are listed as fruit of the spirit?  I call them the “juice” qualities.

During youth camp last week, we had a pre-service game where two students got to choose from a smorgasbord of different types of fruit which ones to juice, and were timed for 30 seconds as they juiced those fruits. The student with the most juice at the end of the time limit was the winner!  Being that I was on the first row, I saw how hard the students had to press and squeeze to get that precious juice out.

I call the fruit of the spirit juice qualities because they are traits that can really only be observed during times of squeezing and pressure.  When can we show self-control?  When we are in a situation where most would lose control!  When can patience be observed?  When we are in a sition that tests our patience.

When the problems of life give us a squeeze, what is it that comes out?  Someone cuts you off.  You walk barefoot around the house and you smack your little toe on a chair.  Your kids forget to do a chore they are supposed to do every week, and they stare at you blankly when you remind them.  And yes, I’m talking about my last two hours. But you know what it means to be tested.   Pray with me today for the Lord to make our responses evident of Christ in our life, and for the fruit of the spirit to be produced in greater abundance.
