Psalm 63:1-5
God, you are my God; I eagerly seek you. I thirst for you; my body faints for you in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water. So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory. My lips will glorify you because your faithful love is better than life. So I will bless you as long as I live; at your name, I will lift up my hands. You satisfy me as with rich food;  my mouth will praise you with joyful lips.
In Psalm 63, David writes from the wilderness of Judah, a place of desolation and dryness. His words might resonate deeply you if you are experiencing a season of spiritual drought: "God, you are my God; I eagerly seek you. I thirst for you; my body faints for you in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water" (Psalm 63:1).
David's response to his dry season is not despair, but a seeking of God. He recognizes his need and turns to the only One who can satisfy. In our own dry seasons, it’s easy to feel abandoned or discouraged, but David’s example teaches us to redirect our focus.
He continues, "So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory" (Psalm 63:2). Instead of fixating on his desolate surroundings, David recalls God’s past faithfulness and power. This act of remembrance strengthens his faith and restores his hope. When we face spiritual dryness, we can draw encouragement from our own experiences of God’s presence and faithfulness.
David’s trust in God leads him to praise: "My lips will glorify you because your faithful love is better than life" (Psalm 63:3). Even in the desert, he chooses to glorify God, knowing that His love is steadfast and unchanging. Praise shifts our perspective from our circumstances to the greatness of God, filling our hearts with gratitude and hope.
Finally, David finds peace in God’s constant presence: "You satisfy me as with rich food; my mouth will praise you with joyful lips" (Psalm 63:5). In our dry seasons, we too can find satisfaction in God alone. He is our refuge, our strength, and our sustenance.
Maybe you aren’t in a spiritual desert today but if you are, let Psalm 63 remind you to seek God, remember His faithfulness, praise Him for His steadfast love, and find satisfaction in His presence. Though the desert may be desolate, our God is ever-present, faithful, and life-giving.
