Psalm 29:1-2

Honor the Lord, you heavenly beings;

    honor the Lord for his glory and strength.

Honor the Lord for the glory of his name.

    Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

Where do you need God’s power in your life?  What situation or struggle do you need to let God speak over today? When we find ourselves weathering storms in our weakness, Psalm 29 reminds us of God’s great power that we are anchored to this very day.

Read a few more verses of this awe inspiring psalm and consider His strength and glory.  Count and note all of the descriptions of the voice of the Lord:

3 The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea.

    The God of glory thunders.

    The Lord thunders over the mighty sea.

4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;

    the voice of the Lord is majestic.

5 The voice of the Lord splits the mighty cedars;

    the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon.

6 He makes Lebanon’s mountains skip like a calf;

    he makes Mount Hermon[b] leap like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord strikes

    with bolts of lightning.

8 The voice of the Lord makes the barren wilderness quake;

    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks

    and strips the forests bare.

In his Temple everyone shouts, “Glory!”

Will you let Him speak into your situation today?  The mighty cedars of Lebanon could grow up to 120 feet tall and 30 feet around, and yet God could shatter them with His voice.  It is humbling to consider the great machinery it takes man to chop mature trees into lumber.  I was reminded of human weakness even after a recent day of yard work and my sore muscles that resulted from breaking up twigs and sticks that had fallen over the winter months.  We are weak, but God is strong.  He is mighty and powerful to save.

Our Lord God is not a stagnant, distant god who lived long ago. He is alive and is very much still at work and on the move in your life and in the world today.  His voice still echoes, thunders, splits, shatters, makes, strikes, and shakes.  These powerful words grab our attention and this is the very power of God that we can call upon to fight for us and in us today.

What area in your life needs God’s power?  We are weak on our own, but anchored to God, our faith is ground-shaking. Let us begin to pray and trust the mighty God whose voice thunders over the sea.  When we consider God’s power, it brings us to our knees. In His holiness, we are reminded that we fall short. However, rather than running away from Him in fear, we can run to God in worship with reverent awe and wonder.  Remembering the splendor of God’s holiness not only gives us His strength and moves us to repentance, but it also blesses us with peace. He is our King forever (Psalm 29:10-11). Let us join the voices of God’s people as we shout “Glory!”

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Father God, you are holy and mighty.  I ask you for your strength today.  Speak life and power into difficult situations that I am facing today.  Break and shatter areas of sin in my life.  Mighty God I trust and yield to your Everlasting Word. In Jesus Name, Amen.

MEMORY VERSE OF THE WEEK:

Proverbs 25:28

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
