Psalm 86:8-13
There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
   nor are there any works like yours.
9 All the nations you have made shall come
   and worship before you, O Lord,
   and shall glorify your name.
10 For you are great and do wondrous things;
   you alone are God.
11 Teach me your way, O Lord,
   that I may walk in your truth;
   unite my heart to fear your name.
12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
   and I will glorify your name forever.
13 For great is your steadfast love toward me;
   you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

King David pens a prayer in Psalm 86, crying out to the Lord for Him to free him from the enemies who were attacking him (v.1-7). In verse 8 we see a shift in his tone though as he begins to give a shout of praise and worship to God for who He is and what He has done. King David makes the declaration that no one compares to Yahweh God and His greatness. There are many items, possessions, and things in our life that try and pose as good replicas of God, but in reality they are counterfeit and cannot compare to the Creator of heaven and earth.

There were many times in my life where I thought I saw a friend or someone I knew across the way, and would go and engage them, just to realize they weren’t that individual; they were just a doppelgänger, a look-alike. Listen can I be honest with you this morning friend? There is no idol that comes close to comparing to the Lord God Almighty. That idol in your life did not fashion the heavens and set the stars into place. That idol did not knit you in the womb of your mother (Psalm 139:14). That idol did not make a way for your salvation by sending Jesus to die in your place. Hey! That idol will not be there for you in the darkest moments of your life either. The Lord God Almighty did all those things!

David exclaims of God’s greatness in worship in the Psalm. The same God who formed the heavens and the earth and formed us, is the same God who comforts us in our darkest of days (2 Corinthians 1:4). The One who commands the rain to fall and holds all the planets in orbit is the same one who knows the very number of hairs on our head and loves us enough that at our worst, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die so we could be brought back into relationship with Him. Listen, no one, nothing compares to the Lord. He alone is the only One worthy of worship and rule in our life.

This morning, what are some of those idols that are fighting for the throne of our heart? If we were to be honest, all of us have them. May I encourage you to see the truth David wrote in Psalm 86 that no thing, or no one compares to Yahweh God Almighty! May we choose to crush the proverbial idols in our life and worship the one True God, walking in His truth and proclaiming that truth to a lost and dying world.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Lord, there indeed is no one like you! Help me to continue to place you as the king of my heart today. Reveal those idols and counterfeit gods in my life. I lay those at your feet and run to you today. I love you! Amen!
