Psalm 27:4 NLT
The one thing I ask of the Lord—
the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
delighting in the Lord’s perfections
and meditating in his Temple.
If you could ask the Lord for one thing what would it be? Pause for a moment to think how you would answer. Would you ask for solutions? For Healing? For Success? We could fill in the blank with a lot of different things. David’s answer to this longing gives pause for thought.
David’s life was full of challenges. His past was full of decisions that perhaps he would have lived differently given the chance for a do-over. He had enemies. He experienced danger. He lost friendships and loved ones. God answered some of his prayers with no and wait. He wasn’t a perfect parent. He wasn’t a perfect spouse. Though David loved God, he still made mistakes. Regardless of his ups and downs, David doesn’t wish for a different life.
In this sweet moment of reflection, the one thing David desires most for his life is to just hang out with God and worship. Does that challenge you like it does me today?
What is the thing you desire most for your life? Is it to spend time with God? May the Lord mold and shape our heart to desire the one thing that matters most in life, worshipping the One True God.
David wasn’t perfect (and neither are we), but he learned to live in the place of God’s love and forgiveness. His fears and regrets had been replaced with joy and unwavering confidence in God. There was no need for a do-over because he had already been set free!
David not only loved God, he trusted God. He enjoyed God. David knew the Lord well and delighted in His perfect ways! Perhaps that is one reason God referred to David as “a man after my own heart” (Acts 13:22). Psalm 27 is richly woven with David’s confidence in God’s protection and provision regardless of circumstance. He had learned to wait patiently for God’s timing and was confident he would see God’s goodness while on earth. No wonder David wanted to hang out with God!
God wants our undivided heart too–more than a perfect past, more than works of today, more than our plans for tomorrow. David illustrated everlasting joy that is found only through a personal relationship with the Lord. Through Christ we are free to hang out with God every single day. Yes, God actually wants us there! “Come and talk with me,” God says in Psalm 27:8. That is a dear friendship! Hang out with God and worship today.
PRAYER FOR TODAY:
Father God, I worship and delight in you! The one thing I desire most of all is to live out my days in your presence—remind me often in this busy world to talk with you and hang out there in my day. Take my fears and regrets and replace them with joy and unwavering confidence in you Jesus. Give me a heart that seeks yours! In Jesus Name, Amen.
