Exodus 5:1-2

1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’” 2 But Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”

In the Exodus account we see the God of the universe zealous for His own people. We see Him call a man by the name of Moses to lead the charge of freeing the Hebrew people from slavery in Egypt. In the beginning of chapter 5 Moses and Aaron obey the LORD by going to Pharaoh and requesting that he let the Hebrew people go. However, Pharaoh’s response to the request was a question, asked by many in and around us– “Who is the Lord?”

The LORD spoken of here in Exodus 5 is the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. The LORD in all caps speaks to His name Yahweh God. See, the LORD was not Pharaoh’s god and so not only did he mention he didn’t know Him, he had no regard for what He said nor did he care to listen to Him. What you will see in the chapters ahead is that Pharaoh and the Egyptians learn rather quickly who the LORD is and what He can do.

If we were to be honest today, we can find ourselves as believers falling into the same boat as Pharaoh did here in Exodus 5. We can fall victim to what I like to call Spiritual Amnesia, forgetting who the LORD is and what all He has done and can do in our lives. In doing so, we can fall victim to disregarding what He tells us to do as well. In case you may have forgotten who the LORD, He is:

ABBA FATHER (Romans 8:15)

ALMIGHTY GOD (Genesis 17:15)

THE ALPHA AND OMEGA (Revelation 22:13)

THE MOST HIGH GOD (Genesis 14:19)

The EVERLASTING GOD (Genesis 16:13)

The CREATOR (Genesis 1:1)

COMFORTER (John 14:26; 2 Corinthians 1:4)

The GOD WHO SEES ME (Genesis 16:13)

KING OF KINGS (1 Timothy 6:15)

LORD OF LORDS (1 Timothy 6:15)

LOVING FATHER (Matthew 6:9)

THE UNCHANGING ONE (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8)

LOVE (JOHN 3:16)

He is God almighty! He is all of those names and so much more! He is worthy of all of our affection. He is worthy of all of our attention! He is the LORD! We are His! Hallelujah! Choose today to worship Him. Instead of falling victim to spiritual amnesia when life gets tough, or when God seems far away, choose spirited praise and surrender because the LORD does not change, nor has He left you!

PRAYER FOR TODAY:
Dear Heavenly Father Lord, help me today to meditate on who You are! Help me not to allow circumstances or distractions to lead to Spiritual Amnesia, but rather may my knowledge of who You are and what You have done in my life stir my love and affection for You more deeply. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

MEMORY VERSE OF THE WEEK:

Matthew 7:28-29

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
