Hebrews 12:14

“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

Hebrews 12:14 encourages us with the two major points as we pursue living the Christian life. It encourages us to live both horizontally and vertically.

The verse begins with an important call to action – “Work at living in peace with everyone.” Peace is not something that simply happens; it’s something we actively pursue. In a world filled with conflicts and divisions, we are challenged to be peacemakers. This means seeking reconciliation, forgiveness, and understanding in our relationships. It’s a reminder that as followers of Christ, we should be known for our efforts to bring harmony and unity to those around us.

The second part of the verse tells us to “work at living a holy life.” Holiness involves setting ourselves apart for God’s purposes and living in a way that aligns with His character. It’s a continuous process of growth and transformation. We pursue holiness by seeking God daily, allowing His Word to shape our lives, and striving to live in obedience to His commands. Holiness is not about perfection but about a sincere desire to become more like Christ.

The verse leaves us with a powerful reminder of the stakes involved: “those who are not holy will not see the Lord.” Our pursuit of holiness is not in vain; it has eternal significance. It determines our ability to experience God’s presence and ultimately see Him face to face.

Hebrews 12:14 challenges us to be diligent in our efforts to live at peace with others and to strive for holiness. As we embrace these principles, we draw closer to God, reflect His character, and become agents of His peace in a world that desperately needs it.
